We have been growing and managing grassland for 60yrs. We take great pride in ensuring regular soil samples are taken, poisonous plants are checked for and immediately eliminated and weeds are dealt with as necessary. The land is fed once or twice a year with fertiliser and manure as required according to the soil samples and horses do not graze our haylage fields.
When making haylage, timing is of the essence. It takes years of experience to know when to cut and how much working or stirring is required to make the quality we aim for and we won’t stand for anything less. Being baling contractors, we are in a privileged position to have priority. So when the weather is right and the grass is ready it is cut, stirred and baled in perfect time. We try our very best to ensure the very best quality of haylage which is why we guarantee every bale.
Up until now we have been very lucky as our customers have been our sole advertisers via word of mouth but we have now just expanded and can provide small handy bales of haylage which are ideal for travelling.

If you are looking at this site, presumably you are wanting haylage, but what exactly makes our haylage some of the best for your horse? Our 60 years experience of managing grassland is the answer!
What is haylage and why is it better for horses than hay or silage? We grow grass specifically to use for haylage and when it is at its best we cut it. If we were to let it dry completely, that would be hay which is dusty and has fungal spores. If we pack it too soon, the moisture content is too high and it becomes silage which is too moist for horses. With the correct moisture content, the grass ferments to the point where it is acidic enough to stop microbial activity and thus maintain its “fresh” food value. This is an anaerobic process which is why the bales are wrapped in airtight bales.
Knowing when to cut, when to bale, and wrap is the key that allows us to make Spring Head Farm Haylage ideal food for your horse or pony.
